OtherDefying Goofiness: 3 Oregon Startups Helping us Look & Feel our Best Outdoors

Winter is fast approaching, but who cares? No matter the season, we Oregonians love us some outdoors.

Yet there’s one problem: Many of our options when it comes to outdoor apparel and equipment are, well, a little… goofy. Enter these Oregon innovators who are reimagining what we can look and feel like as we enjoy the Great Outdoors:

Rover scooter from Works ElectricA scooter for the rugged outdoorsperson

If you think scooters are for 10-year-olds and college students, think again. Works Electric has crafted a scooter that is anything but goofy. Because, as Works Electric says, “If you’re going to build a battery-powered scooter that you would actually be proud to ride, it had better be awesome.”  With chunky tires designed to drive on-road or off-, The Rover can go up to 35 miles per hour—despite the fact that it weighs only 95 pounds. That’s a lot of power for something you can fit under your desk.

Watermelon Helmet from Oregon Startup Nutcase HelmetsBike helmets that sing (well, not literally)

There’s no doubt about it: Bike helmets are goofy. Instead of futilely attempting to make bike helmets look sleeker and more stylish, Nutcase Helmets defies goofiness by embracing it. After all, if you’re going to wear a lump of foam on your head, you may as well have some fun with it. Show some personality with a Pink Cheetah or Watermelon helmet—because while safety is serious, your helmet doesn’t have to be.

Handful sports braThe secret to happiness… in a sports bra?

For active women, sports bras serve a vital function, but they are no fashion statement. That is, until Handful, the “perfect sports bra” that women are actually excited about wearing. In fact, many Handful enthusiasts rock their bras at work and on the weekend, not just while working out. Handful makes the somewhat audacious claim that their bras make women happy—but in perusing the photos on their Facebook page, it’s hard to believe otherwise.

What other goofiness-defying outdoor startups would you add to this list?
